Is this GEN Z’s Jack Antanoff? Why the big labels don’t want you to know about him.
“Finn Bennett is one of the few people left in the music industry that didn’t just get lucky. He was unlucky if anything. He made everyone who touted that making it in the industry was just about timing and luck shut the f*** up.”
While everyone his age waited for their big break, Finn put his head down and became a renaissance man of sorts. He has his pilots license, he surfs, lives in a cool SoCal beach town, and still finds the time to work with some of the biggest names in music. He plays every instrument, is publicly credited on over 300 songs, is about to graduate from Berklee with a Bachelors. No wonder the labels want to keep him to themselves.
Finn Bennett is the guy you take home to your parents. The heart throb of the industry not because he is out partying in New York, but because he came in to save your session on a Friday night while your backup engineer was out partying. After working in the industry as a touring drummer, Finn knew he wanted to make muisc his career, but he didn’t want to rely on luck. He used what he calls “The Jackson Pollock Method” which in his words:
“…is essentially where you just do a bit of everything. You are just throwing paint at the wall and seeing what sticks, without overdoing it. Dan told me that I create the perfect amount of controlled chaos around me, which I think is a nice way of phrasing it since he assumes I have control. I don’t.” – Finn Bennett
It’s no surprise that Finn is currently at the top of the Behind the Board prediction’s for the Triple Threat of the Year Award and the Up and Coming Junior of the Year Award. At age 23, Finn has managed to somehow have it all. Or at least we think…
“Finn has become somewhat of a secret weapon for a lot of labels and big studios. Even for A&R’s like myself, he’s the secret item on the menu that only few people know about. They keep it on the low down and everyone thinks that they have kept him in the shadows as their little secret. I’ll tell you right now, he’s about as secret as animal style fries at In n Out. That being said, no one wants him on the menu because they want to feel like they are in the cool kids club.” – David Rambaugh
“I mean I won’t lie I am pretty protective of him when it comes to a lot of gigs but that’s just because he’s really good at what he does, and is a cool guy to be around. I think the social clout is the last thing on my mind when hiring him, and I know it’s the last thing on his mind too. That in itself is a nice change from most kid’s his age who can’t stop showing you their latest indie-pop demo EP or whatever it is they want to brag about.” – Anonymous Grammy Winning Artist.
We had to see what all of the fuss is about, but when our team tried to do their usual research the came up empty handed. We thought we might of had the wrong name or that he was just another myth that people had hyped up. That was until we found his statistics on BMI, which not only confirmed that he was actually all the things everyone had said, but confirmed that he really is a bit of a secret. What looked like the typical college student instagram profile, was in reality far from that. We would have missed him if we weren’t tipped off. He doesn’t post about any of his big career achievement’s, and posts more about his adventure surfing and traveling with his girlfriend more than music. (Sorry ladies, he is off the market.)
We sat down with him to try learn a little bit more about who he is, what he does, and why he stays so under the radar.
